Mary-Kate Spring Lee and Jim Hancock present A Minstrel Meets a Harper!
We met at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire many years ago, and have been performing sets together there every chance we get. We love playing our harp and guitar together, and the way our voices blend is truly joyful for us.
This is a thirty minute long EP with eight of our favorite songs, from ancient instrumental melodies to songs in both English and Gaelic.
We both cherish the storytelling power of music, and the spontaneity and fun of playing live music together and with our friends.
We hope you will enjoy this offering of tunes and songs from our repertoire.

Well a maid gone to Comber her market to learn To sell for her mammy three hanks of fine yarn She met with a young man along the highway And that was to cause her dally and stray Chorus: Sit down beside me I mean you no harm Sit down beside me this new tune to lean Here are three guineas your mammy to pay So lay down your yarn till the next market day They sat down together the grass it was green The day was the fairest that ever they'd seen The look in your eyes would lead angels astray So lay down your yarn till the next market day Chorus Well the maid she went home and the words that he said The song that he sang her still rang in her head She said I'll go find him by land or by sea Till he learns me that tune called the next market day Chorus

Saucy Sailor 02:31
Come me own one Come me fair one Come now unto me Could you fancy a poor sailor lad Who has just come from the sea? You are ragged love And you're dirty love And your clothes smell much of tar So be gone now you saucy sailor lad So be gone you jack tar If I am ragged love And I'm dirty love And me clothes smell much of tar I have silver in my pocket love And gold in great store And then when she Heard him say so On bended knee she fell I will marry my dear Henry For I love a sailor lad so well Do you think that I I am foolish love Do you think that I am daft For to wed with a poor country girl Where no fortune's to be had I will cross the briny ocean I will whistle and sing And since you have refused the offer Love Some other girl will wear the ring She was sad for just a moment Then she turned to him and said There's no finer ring in all the world but I'll Find a much better bed For I am frolicsome And I am easy Good tempered and free And I don't give a single penny boys What the world thinks of me

Do you love an apple? Do you love a pear? Do you love a laddie with curly brown hair? Chorus (after each verse): But still I love him, I can't deny him I'll be with him wherever he goes Before I got married I wore a black shawl But now that I'm married I wear bugger all He stood at the corner, a fag in his mouth Two hands in his pockets, he whistled me out He works at the pier for nine bob a week Come Saturday night, he comes rolling home drunk Before I got married I'd sport and I'd play But now, the cradle, it gets in me way Do you love an apple? Do you love a pear? Do you love a laddie with bonnie brown hair?

There were three sisters in the north Lay the bend to the bonny broom And they lived in their mother’s house And you’ll beguile a lady soon There came a man one evening late Lay the bend… And he came knocking at the gate And you’ll beguile… The eldest sister let him in And locked the door with a silver pin The second sister made his bed And laid soft pillows ‘neath his head The youngest sister, fair and bright She lay beside him all through the night And in the morning, come the day She said, “Young man, will you marry me?” And he said, “Yes, I’ll marry thee If you can answer this to me” “What is greener than the grass? And what is smoother than the glass?” “What is louder than a horn? And what is sharper than a thorn?” “What is deeper than the sea? And what is longer than the way?” “Envy’s greener than the grass Flattery’s smoother than the glass” “Rumor’s louder than a horn Slander’s sharper than a thorn” “Regret is deeper than the sea But love is longer than the way” The eldest sister rang the bell She rang it from the highest hill The second sister made the gown She sewed it of the silk so fine The youngest sister, true and wise They’ve made of her a lovely bride And now fair maids, I bid adieu These parting words I’ll leave with you May you always constant prove Unto the one that you do love

I wish I were on yonder hill 'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill Till every tear would turn a mill Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn. Shule, shule, shule aroon Shule go sukar agus, shule go kewn, Shule go durrus oggus aylig lume, Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn. I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel, I'll sell my only spinning wheel, To buy my love a sword of steel Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn. I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red, And 'round the world I'll beg my bread, Until my parents shall wish me dead, Iss guh day thoo avorneen slawn.
