Mary-Kate Spring Lee and Jim Hancock present A Minstrel Meets a Harper!
We met at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire many years ago, and have been performing sets together there every chance we get. We love playing our harp and guitar together, and the way our voices blend is truly joyful for us.
This is a thirty minute long EP with eight of our favorite songs, from ancient instrumental melodies to songs in both English and Gaelic.
We both cherish the storytelling power of music, and the spontaneity and fun of playing live music together and with our friends.
We hope you will enjoy this offering of tunes and songs from our repertoire.

about

I first heard this song from Susan McKeown and was instantly enchanted by this Irish song in which nothing too tragic happens! It has long been a favorite of mine to play at the PA Renaissance Faire, and is one of the first songs Jim would sit in on during my sets.

lyrics

Well a maid gone to Comber her market to learn
To sell for her mammy three hanks of fine yarn
She met with a young man along the highway
And that was to cause her dally and stray

Chorus:
Sit down beside me I mean you no harm
Sit down beside me this new tune to lean
Here are three guineas your mammy to pay
So lay down your yarn till the next market day

They sat down together the grass it was green
The day was the fairest that ever they'd seen
The look in your eyes would lead angels astray
So lay down your yarn till the next market day

Chorus

Well the maid she went home and the words that he said
The song that he sang her still rang in her head
She said I'll go find him by land or by sea
Till he learns me that tune called the next market day

Chorus
